At least 10 people have been killed and three others injured when a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon local time. Soon after the incident, police arrested an 18-year-old white man from the supermarket as a suspect. His identity was not initially disclosed. It was later discovered that he was a young white man in New York. He carried out the attack out of interest in racism. According to documents submitted to the court, the suspect has been identified as Peyton Gendron.
He is a resident of Southern Tyre, New York, near the Pennsylvania border. Police said the young man appeared alone with an assault rifle. He drove a few hours from home to buffalo, a black-dominated area. He started firing before entering the parking area of the supermarket’s car. He also broadcast (live) the entire event on Amazon’s Twitch platform.
Officials said 11 of the 13 casualties in the shooting were black. The other two are white. Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said peyton Gentron was charged with murder and taken to court hours after the shooting. He could be sentenced to life imprisonment for this crime. There is no death penalty in a New York court trial.
Flynn also said that the court denied Gendron bail and ordered him to be in police custody. The court also ordered forensic examination. He was ordered to appear before the court again on May 19.
Authorities say that according to local media reports, Gendron is a student at Broom Community College, The State University of New York, near Binghammonton. He wanted to commit suicide immediately after the attack. But before that, the police arrested him. Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said in a press statement that Gendron held a gun to his neck when police surrounded him after shooting at the supermarket. He later surrendered after a conversation with police officers.
Gammaglia added that Gendron Tops shot and killed three people at the parking lot before entering a supermarket called Friendly Markets. Soon after, he started shooting with a former police officer working as a security guard at the supermarket. But as Gendron’s body had special protection armor, he was saved from bullets. Nine people who came shopping at the supermarket, including the security guard, were killed in his shooting. Three employees of the supermarket were injured.
Danal Harris, who works as tops manager, said he heard at least 70 gunshots. He stumbled several times and fell before exiting through the door behind the market. The gunman’s outfit looked like he was a member of the army.
Catherine Crofton, a retired fire service personnel who witnessed the witness, said she saw the gunman shooting from his balcony. He first shot a woman. The woman was going to the supermarket. He then shot a woman who was busy shopping at the supermarket. Then he hid in fear.
Stephen Belongia, an employee of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (FBI), said the attack could be investigated under the law as both hate crimes and violent racist attacks.
Erie County Sheriff John Garcia told a news conference: “This man is a complete devil. He came from outside our community and committed a hate crime directly inspired by racism. ’
U.S. President Joe Biden condemned the incident as a “despicable” act. He says there is no safe haven for hate. Everything in the capacity has to be done to put an end to terrorism from hatred.
New York Governor Cathy Hochul said the attacker had broadcast his despicable acts live on social media. He is disappointed that the platform from which it was broadcast has not taken any action.
